It’s a Three Dog Night

January 25th, 2008 · No Comments

When I went to bed last night, the wind was whipping around the house and sometimes through the house. I could hear the windows rattling in their frames as the wind hit them. Even with the storm windows down there was enough of a draft to keep the house feeling chilly.

As soon as I headed off to the bedroom, the dogs rushed to join me. I got in bed and under the down comforter and the dogs promptly curled up around me. I was thinking that it truly might be a three dog night. At the time, I had no idea where the term had come from but I was as grateful as they were for the additional warmth.

This morning I looked up the term to find out what the meaning really was. It turns out that the meaning is pretty close to my experience and it comes from Australia. The Aboriginal people whose life is pretty primitive used to keep warm on cold winter nights by cuddling up with their dogs. The severity of the cold was described by how many dogs it took to keep warm.

With the temperatures down in the teens at night this week. It’s definitely a “three dog night.” I guess if we hits single digits they will all be in the bed with me. I do draw the line with goats and chickens though. No matter how cold it gets, they won’t be joining me.
